“There's a species, Kittiwake, we're looking at just now here, but there are a lot of colonies around the UK and up into Shetland, specifically in places like St. Kilda. The declines that we've seen in kittiwakes are huge. In the timeframe that it's happened in, it's absolutely massive.
So in the peak here in 1990 or 1991, we had nearly 20,000 kittiwakes, and now we've got 4006. So, in such a short space of time that is a 76% decline in the species. That's not normal… It really is quite a dramatic decline for the kittiwakes. We think the main reason behind that is the food source… sandeels are one of their main surface foods.
We think that the decline in sandeels, if you read the data, is potentially linked to overfishing and also climate change as well. So they think that their populations have moved into colder water because of the seas warming, and that will affect several species.”
