“I believe climate change is the most prevalent issue in today's world, as what will any other issues matter if our world becomes inhospitable.
It is a growing worry for me; a young person who doesn’t know what their future will turn out like, who isn't even certain I will have one due to climate change.
This is a shared anxiety between many people of my age – so it is incredibly frustrating when all the politicians and people in power don’t treat climate change like a real problem and keep doing nothing.
It is even more infuriating knowing they will mostly all be dead before their decisions have a real impact on the world. For me and so many others this will be in the middle of my life, when I may be starting a family, at the height of a career or even retired and meant to be relaxing.
However, I am forced to consider what no other generation has had to: is it ethical to have children when the world they are brought into may not be liveable?
Will this career choice still be viable in a future world? Should I even bother to get a job, or should I just travel and see the world before it’s too late and everything is ruined?
Some of my main concerns for my future is increasing global temperatures and the effect this may have on everything, it could melt glaciers in Greenland causing sea levels to rise and may disturb ocean currents which play a vital role in the world's weather systems, this could disrupt the growth of food leaving many hungry, it may also affect aquatic life which is a huge source of food for many.
The rise in temperatures may also render many parts of the world unliveable, forcing many people to move, creating climate refugees around the world, and overcrowding in some areas.
Also, the extent plastic pollution is getting to is extremely concerning, specifically in the ocean, it may be causing infertility in ocean life and if we are consuming that food it may have the same effect on us, not to mention any other unknown health risks it may cause.
My biggest worry is just the whole uncertainty of everything – as this has never happened before and we don’t really know how bad things could get.”
